Cheetah Robot Created to Run

Defense research institute in the United States, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency was having an ambitious project. They created a robot named runner ATLAS. Cheetah-shaped four-legged robot that is designed to be fast runners.

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), together with Boston Dynamics to develop the robot in the world's fastest sprinters. The robot is expected to climb, past the narrow spaces, and can maneuver swiftly. ATLAS is expected to penetrate the speed of 20-30 miles per hour (32-48 km per hour, if 1 mile equals 1.6 km). However, he has not been able to replicate the original speed of a cheetah.

Boston Dynamics has been experienced to develop intelligent robots. Previously, the company has created a robot PETMAN shaped like a man without a head and BIGDOG robot.

According to Marc Raibert, president of Boston Dynamics, it is still trying to match the speed of cheetahs that reached 96-112 km per hour. "There's no reason not to match the original speed, but it takes time to reach that figure," said Marc Raibert, president of Boston Dynamics, told the Boston Herald.

DARPA funding this program with the aim of creating a robot capable of moving fast and agile. Prototype ATLAS will be out approximately 20 months. ATLAS may someday be used for various purposes on the battlefield.
